Having been in business for over 12 years, Sentinel Mouthguards has really stepped up its game in the mouthguard industry. Unlike its key competitors, who manufacture the guards en masse, the company prides itself on hand-curating all its orders.

With all the care and effort the company claims to put into its products, how are customers experiencing them? Are these mouthguards really worth it?

Let’s dive into this extensive Sentinel Mouthguards review and explore all the key aspects, including:

  • Understanding how Sentinel Mouthguards work;
  • Detailed overview of Sentinel Mouthguards;
  • Customer feedback;
  • Pros and cons of Sentinel Mouthguards.

Overview of Sentinel Mouthguards

Sentinel Mouthguards stand out for their personalized approach to dental protection. The company was founded to eliminate the compromise between quality, comfort, and cost many people face when looking for a mouthguard solution.

With a lab in the US and technicians with over thirty years of combined experience, Sentinel Mouthguards has been at the forefront of providing dental-grade materials that are non-toxic and durable, ensuring safety and longevity.

This at-home mouthguard eliminates the lengthy process of visiting your dentist for the same products. Furthermore, you enjoy similar benefits at a fraction of the cost.

Who Should Consider Sentinel Night Guards?

Sentinel Night Guards are designed for patients who experience dental conditions that can be mitigated or managed using a mouthguard. Some of these conditions include:

  • Bruxism: This condition is characterized by the grinding of teeth and clenching of the jaw, often unconsciously and during sleep. Sentinel Night Guards provide a protective barrier to prevent wear and tear on the teeth and alleviate jaw strain.
  • TMJ Disorders: Temporomandibular Joint Disorders involve pain and compromised movement of the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. Using a mouthguard can help in reducing the symptoms by preventing jaw clenching.
  • Sleep Apnea: Although not a direct treatment, mouthguards can aid in managing mild cases of sleep apnea by keeping the airway open during sleep.

While Sentinel remains one of our top mouthguards for TMJ disorders and bruxism, it is important to note that not everyone can be a good candidate.

To be eligible for Sentinel Mouthguards, you also have to meet certain requirements besides wanting to alleviate the symptoms of bruxism or TMJ disorders. Some of these additional requirements that can make you a good candidate are:

  • Healthy Teeth and Gums: It’s important that you have a good oral health foundation, as the mouthguard will fit over existing teeth and should not aggravate any underlying conditions.
  • Commitment to Oral Hygiene: Regular cleaning of the mouthguard is essential, so it’s crucial to be committed to cleaning and maintaining the guard and your oral hygiene.

However, there are certain factors that may rule you out as a candidate for Sentinel Mouthguards:

  • Ongoing Dental Work: If you are undergoing dental procedures or adjustments, such as orthodontic treatment, it may not be the right time to get a mouthguard. However, with the assistance of your dentist, you can still find a good selection of the best mouthguards to use with braces.
  • Gum Disease or Unstable Teeth: If you have active gum disease or unstable teeth, you may find that a mouthguard exacerbates these issues.

It’s always recommended to consult a dental professional before using any mouthguard to ensure it’s the right choice for your specific needs and conditions.

How Does Sentinel Mouthguards Work?

The primary role of Sentinel Mouthguards is to serve as a buffer between your teeth. This barrier prevents the upper and lower teeth from coming into direct contact, which is crucial for people who grind their teeth during sleep — known as bruxism.

By cushioning the teeth, Sentinel Mouthguards help distribute the force exerted during grinding, protecting the enamel from wear and reducing the risk of fractures or chips.

Sentinel Mouthguards Customer Reviews

Based on the company’s user-friendly website, it is apparent that Sentinel Mouthguards is putting its customer’s interests first. Moreover, we loved that they have put forward all their key policies in the open without leaving room for ambiguity.

As a rule of thumb, you can only get the right picture about a product by getting reactions from real customers who have used it. We scouted the internet, searching for real customer reviews on Sentinel Mouthguards.

Although there weren’t as many customer reviews as you would usually see on other top mouthguard brands like Chomper Labs, the company still boasted a few, most of which showed a mixed reaction from the customers.

While many users of the product were relatively satisfied, a fair number of them also showcased their dissatisfaction.

The Positive End

Based on the numerous reviews and feedback we found online, we noted that most customers appreciate the custom fit and comfort of Sentinel Mouthguards. Most acknowledge the ease with which they can wear the guards throughout the day without discomfort or self-consciousness.

The invisibility of the guards when worn and the ability to speak clearly while using them are frequently mentioned as significant advantages. This places Sentinel Mouthguards up there among some of the clearest mouthguards on the market. This is ideal for busy individuals who grind or clench during the day but still want to remain discreet about their treatment.

Other users also reported a reduction in headaches and jaw pain, attributing this to the effectiveness of the mouthguards in preventing teeth grinding and clenching.

Some users have also noted the ordering process as another positive aspect of the company. They described it as simple and straightforward, with clear instructions for taking dental impressions at home.

Scouting through the many reviews online, one trend seemed to pick up — a gap in the company’s communication. Many customers complained of poor customer service, especially in the later stages of their processes.

Other customers also complained about the clarity of the company’s return policies and warranty. They mentioned that it is actually more complicated than it appears to get a refund from the company whenever they do not feel like the product works on them.

However, it would be important to note that the company’s director could be seen responding to most of these reviews, providing relevant clarification to the customers while promising to expedite any of their concerns. In our view, this is a good starting point, as the company also acknowledges the dissatisfied customers.

It is also evident that Sentinel is still a small company, run by only a few individuals if what we’re seeing on their website is to go by. Perhaps they need more personnel, especially in the customer service department.

Let’s have a look at what some of these customers had to say:

Screenshot of sentinel mouthguard review by a real customer: David D's profile image David D on BBB 4 years ago Honestly, I have to give this business a real 5 + stars because they never stop trying to please their customers, I made an impression for them and received their nite guard back very quickly. I was so satisfied with the guard that I decided to order another just to have a backup as they can get worn quickly. In my opinion, these are very good and so far have been very durable. Their Associate Ashley provided quick professional service, and returned the new guard almost over night. Unfortunately for some reason it didn't fit as well as the previous one. Ashley and Sentinel Mouthguards continued to work to make me happy right up to the present. Working with the customer produces a very satisfying outcome and I sincerely thank them for always trying to please no matter what. These guard have to fit absolutely perfectly so it's a tough job, They always try to make it right and that attitude is great both for their business and for the expectations of the customer. I will definitely use their firm again. Sincerely, David Duhamel

David takes us through his experience, noting that the company was responsive to his concerns, resolving the issues even when the guards failed to fit at first.

MK also reiterates how the company strives to ensure that its customers are satisfied with their products.

Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2021 Size: Lower Teeth My husband has purchased a number of night guards from Sentinel, and the night guards have been excellent. The last night guard lasted much longer than expected. Their customer service has been responsive, and very helpful as well."

Susan acknowledges that Sentinel Mouthguards are durable while noting how responsive and helpful the customer service was to her.

Chirayu P. on BBB 5 years ago Do not believe the refund guarantee. They charge for shipping and handling and impression kits also. ONLY OFFER "PARTIAL" REFUNDS! Business response: Hello! Upon review of this case, we took the side of the customer and issued a full refund. Shipping and handling + impression kits are FREE with any purchase (if purchased within the US). For reference here is our FAQS page including warranty and return information: ******************************************* Thanks, Ashely Sentinel Team

This customer felt shortchanged regarding the refund policy. The company’s director/ founder responded, providing further explanations and assistance.

Matthew 1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Product and Even Worse Customer Service - AVOID! Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020 Verified Purchase I purchased a night guard and retainer last spring. I received the impression kit quickly and instructions were clear. It did take a couple tries to get the thickness/fit just right, and they were willing to work with me. My lower retainer was a little flimsy and broke after about 6 months of wear, even though I followed all the instructions while cleaning and I am not a heavy grinder. Initially, the customer service rep insisted I had to pay for a replacement even though the 12 months hadn't yet lapsed (they have a 12 month guarantee). After expressing my disappointment that their warranty policy was misleading, the owner made things right and shipped a replacement at no additional cost, and said she would clarify the policy. Update: A couple months after I got my replacement for my lower retainer, my upper retainer also broke. The customer service rep said I had to pay $120 for a replacement rather than $75 (upper and lower together cost $150, so $75 for one is more than reasonable, given I was outside the 90 day warranty). Total bait and switch. And they changed their warranty period from a year to 90 days. This shows what little confidence they have in the durability of their product. I would NOT recommend. Go with another more reputable company, even if you have to pay a little more. You will end up paying for replacements too often with Sentinel, and paying more in the long run.

Matthew is showing dissatisfaction, more so in regards to the refunds and warranty policies. Although not much information is provided regarding the complaint, it would be fair to note that the company’s warranty does not state to cover the guards breaking down.

Rather, they state, “If you grind or wear through your guard we will pull your existing dental impression on file and remake it free of charge.” This means Sentinel has to explore each case separately to determine whether it falls within the purview of their warranty.

It is also important to note that the company offers different warranty periods for other products:

  • Soft Night Guard: 6-month warranty
  • Hard and Dual laminated Night Guards: 1-year warranty

In this Reddit discussion, a user wanted to find out if Sentinel is a good mouthguard brand, as various people recommend it. Although there weren’t many reactions in this forum, some users advised the mover of the question to opt for hard night guards rather than soft ones.

Another user @94rado acknowledged their good experience using Sentinel Mouthguards, ultimately recommending them.

Debunking Myths: Is Sentinel Just Hype?

Having been in business since 2012 and still running, Sentinel Mouthguards has mastered the mouthguard industry. Though still a small company, it has served many customers whose reactions, as we have seen, are mixed.

Many loved the products and were generally happy, while others were quite dissatisfied or even disappointed with the company.

Nevertheless, this mixed feedback from real users is expected.

From our general overview, we can conclude that Sentinel Mouthguards are legitimate and effective in resolving issues related to bruxism, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching.
